Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, are treatment plans created to provide maximum support without requiring the guest to put their regular responsibilities on hold during treatment. At Phoenix Rehab Campuses, every outpatient guest is given compassionate and total support to assist them through treatment and help the lessons from therapy and counseling better resonate with them.

What Is an IOP?

An IOP lasts 12 weeks and typically acts as a transition for guests transitioning from inpatient, residential, or sober living programs. IOPs at Phoenix Rehab Campuses consist of three hours of meetings each day for three days every week, and treatment can be scheduled day or night based on the guest’s work or school schedule. Guests can then return home outside of treatment with the freedom to go about their life as usual so long as they abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Each IOP is individualized based on guest needs discovered during psychological and physical health interviews. These screenings are non-invasive and serve as a proactive method to ensure a safe and effective recovery is mapped out for each guest.

Which Recovery Services Are Provided During an IOP?

Treatment administered during an IOP is similar to those offered during inpatient or residential treatment plans due to the amount of time a guest must dedicate to their recovery.

The most common methods and approaches used include:

  • 12-step inspired meetings
  • Group and individual counseling
  • Substance abuse and addiction education
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Rational emotive behavioral therapy
  • Custom dual diagnosis treatment
  • Family therapy
  • Medication management

Each type of therapy and counseling uses a different approach to uncover the driving forces behind an individual’s addiction before addressing them. Tackling the root of addiction enables guests to seamlessly transition into a sober lifestyle without fear of relapse, thanks to understanding environmental triggers and how to avoid them.

Medication management is used in cases of severe dependence towards a substance, typically opioids. Medications such as methadone, naltrexone, suboxone, and buprenorphine help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms during the difficult process of opioid detox. Those struggling with alcohol addiction can be administered acamprosate or disulfiram to alleviate cravings, as alcohol’s accessibility makes it an easy substance to relapse with.

Who Benefits Most From an IOP?

A guest entering an IOP either comes from a more intensive style of treatment or started treatment before their dependence on drugs or alcohol became too severe for outpatient programs. In either case, the best candidates for an IOP will be those nearing their transition from rehab to daily life who no longer require constant supervision. Life and career-building skills are honed during an IOP, and any lingering concerns or health issues are addressed. A robust support system back home is ideal for an IOP as a toxic or dangerous home life can quickly lead guests back to substance abuse.
